Hawaii Shop-Hop Pineapple quilt for 2019

So you all have seen some of these pictures before

These are just some of the fun I brought back from our trip to Hawaii's big island in February

If you can go to Hawaii, I recommend going in February,

The hotels are not full of tourists,

The weather is cooler than the summer but still beats the hell out of snow

And the Big Island Shop-hop goes on for the entire month!

For anyone familiar with Western Washington's annual Shop-hop. ( june 21-29)
It's the shops way of thanking customers for their patronage.

You go around to all the shops,
that are left, (Grumble, grumble, fuss, fuss)
gather a free pattern or a kit if you spend x$ and you have a fun project to do.

Here are all the patterns from the 5 shops around the Island

Row #1 red

Kiluea Kreations in volcano village

BTW each kit had up to 5 full fat quarters to work with so this could all have been done any which way with fabric to spare

Row #2 the yellows

Fabric and Quilting Delights in the Kona hills

And as you can see I did mess  bit with their color way

There was more orange in this row

Row #3 the greens

Top Stitch in Honoka'a

Row #4 the blues

Quilt Passions in down town Kona

 Row 5# the Purples

Kiluea Kreations in Hilo

Here's the flimsy all done with top and background

The top all quilted up pretty,

No binding yet, I'm thinking a dark green

Here's my close up Mr. DeMille!

The Vaca

So We went to Kona on the Big Island in Hawaii for a couple of weeks again this year, Yayas!

Kona Bay

It's awesome to go in the first place,

Kona sunset

made even more so by my wonderful husband, who spoils me rotten!

Banyan tree

This year we planned it around not only BI's shop-hop,

which goes for the full month of February, if any one is interested.

A lovely walk along Ali'i st

But for Quilt passions (QP) Quilting on the beach event, where they sponsor 20 or so classes for a week at the King Kamehameha hotel.

They have been doing them for about 10 years and If you can there is another quilting on the beach in june, I highly recommend going.

My filthy lucker from QP + the packet for quilting on the beach

The fabric Oh the fabric! Every shop has some of the most wonderful balli prints I have ever seen in every color imaginable!

I went a little nutz,

to be fair I had encouragement!

Hubs was egging me on, go ahead we can mail it all home!

RxR in progress for 2015 picked up at QP
whee!

The first pattern that I finished was th shop-hop row by row from 2015 QP has a back log of them for the years between.
Not that I'm trying to tempt you or anything!

Shop-Hop pattern for the 5 BI shops!

when it all arrived at home the first pattern I started was the whale Row by row

Whales

More patterns from other shops
So much fun and so quick!

the whales came in the package already to iron on

so as soon as you sewed up the background you slapped them on and voila!

Then there was the finishing of my own shops Row by row

Pineapple pattern #1
and the completion of the first shop-hop kit.

as it's the corner

there are only 3 parts to it

this one went together quickly also

all my row x rows compleate

I can see Ima be busy for the foreseeable future!

There are also the charity quilts I didn't finish before we left

Husband who spoils me rotten!

and all the life stuff you need do when you get home.

Vaca may be over but I have a lot of lovely reminders to keep me going back as I sew!

Hawaii Shop-Hop part 2

Still loving this mode of stain glass window quilting!

The ladies who chaired this committee should get a solid round of applause and a hearty handshake for picking some really beautiful fabrics!

Though I will warn you, the fabrics for the Strings shop are , In my never-to-be-humble opinion, kinda lousy.
None of the greens or blues match any of the other colors within the set so keep your scraps!

the Strings" panel

The Sand colors did OK blending

as would the grey rock colors have but I wanted a more cohesive look to my blocks so I used the rest of what was already in the "lava" kit

and with all of these I did supplement what we were given in the kit because, me!

The Panels get trickier and more fussy if you follow the course I took to put them together.
Which I heartily recommend because if you start with the beautiful bottom left one with the bromilliads and hibiscus you will be very sad, as it is the fussiest cut of them all!

I did have to fiddle and trim on each block it became more and more needful as each one got more and more complicated.

If you started with the flower block you may just give it all up as too dificult because this one is.

But it is so choice when its all done!

fussy cuts trimming and even had to replace and add a few pieces that that weren't there.

I'll need to drag out my old war horse from pasture to finish this up into a flimsy.

I hope she doesn't hold her retirement against me and decide to stop working all together!

that's all I need anOther machine in the shop!

Oh, another thing about piecing these together, be sure to Iron the foundation to the WRONG side of the fabric! I oopsied that one in a few places. Shh! Don't tell!

Stainglass quilt

 I diiid iit Myyyy waaaay!

This is so simple it should be illegal!

Trace pattern onto  steam-a-seam, cut pieces

Iron steam-a-seam to fabric, cut-out fabric pieces

Iron pieces onto background and

Voila!

                                   Done!

These are so easy I've done 3 in 4 days

Isn't the pattern divine?

Its from the hawaii shop-hop on big island.
they do it the whole month of february

This year was a coordinated pattern that fit together to make a whole top.

Instead of individual blocks with coordinated fabric so if you miss a few shops no big, Like in washington's version.

It makes more sense to do it that way here
but on big I, there are only 6 shops,
easier to do it this way.

You have to hit all the shops so everyone gets shopped

And you get a nice tour of the whole Island

so far so much fun!

I'm thinking of running a class at Gathering fabrics on the technique.

I'd need a simpler pattern though, this one does take a learning curve.

using the blank side of the steam-a-seam for a starter, ironing on the wrong side of the fabric,
making sure you iron a sharp seam the size of the piece so you have a guideline to follow...

Oh, the Sanity!

we went to Hawaii for our honeymoon in April and as is customary I bought more fabric than I meant to.

I have (finally) finished the pattern I bought for it all

as may of you may know I wander off into sane quilting every once in a while and when I do it takes me months to finish what I start mostly because I know find the cutting peacing and sewing down of regular quilting well, BORING! OMG! somebody shoot me please, what was I thinking!

OK now that I have gotten that out of my system I feel really proud of myself, when I can actually finish one of these things in under a year!

the first one is a little wall hanging I saw the turtle pattern in the quilt shop in Volcano village I didn't get it but it played with me in my head until I sewed it down I was originally thinking of putting more turtles on this but my appliqué skills are so rusty I don't want ruin what I have so far .

the second one I couldn't resist (even though I tried!) I bought as a kit for a table runner with one line of pineapples and then fell I lust with more of the fabric so it has turned into a lap quilt.

now I just have to sammich, quilt and bind the darned thing.
this is where it may take longer to finish.....

BJP-May dancing with the volcano

Just when you thought I had fallen off the face of the earth, I appear!
bearing eyecandy! woo....ok, ok. so It's not that exciting.
I have been busy!

a little bit here and a little bit there, I have mostly been out in the garden this summer.

anyway I have finished another BJP piece

as you probably know if you read the blog regularly (or irregularly as the posts go).

I got married this past december and we took our honeymoon in Hawaii.

this is my may bead journal piece I call her dancing with the volcano.
she is the constant lava flow of the pu'u'o'o that has been erupting on big island for over 30 years!

she has reshaped the Island several times and removed whole towns from the map but she always adds a little more than she takes.

the last time we came to big island she was running out to sea, this time she is "adding land" inland so we couldn't go see her with out a 7 mile there day hike or a  chopper so we opted for exploring the rest of the island Wipao valley is stunning!

 where the sun shines bright

the gekkos scamper with you're morning coffee
 the surfing is wicked good
and the turtles laze about  *sigh*

just thinking about it makes me feel cold today!

going commando

in a manner of speaking.
Adam on the leni at his dad's
That's me in the window

My DBF has taken the camera with him to Hilo to visit his dad, who is seriously ill.
so I am without picture taking abillity for a week.
so y'all will just have to wait for pictures of my new stuff.
I'm almost done with the navy and the sun box top so those will be coming soon.
and I have started some small hawaii themed pieces and I was thinking of doing some small table top versions of my witchy-poo hat for the Sunshine serenity shop at countryvilliage here in bothell.
there are about 4-5 I'm still not sure what they will be yet.
but I'm bee buzzy! and if it keeps raining here I'll be productive too!)

big hawaii

Finally finished this wall hanging, it's only been like 3 years!

boy do I know how to procrastinate or what?

some of you may recognize this from a CQ for newbies RR

way back in 2008 this is how the block came back to me.
this is what they looked like before I really got to work on them
And this is what they look like now

I have added a lot of details from each of the blocks taking elements from the other pieces and adding a few more of my own to blend the four parts into a cohesive whole.

I think I did an ok job what do you all think?
